The ONE ‘to-do’ for great health
Do YOU know what is the #1 most important thing you can do for your health?
Straight up – the answer is … drumroll please… a million different things. So, take a deep breath… don’t be mad at me… and let’s find out what the number one thing YOU can do for YOUR health.
This question is SOOOO common and I totally get it, we all (including me) want the simple one step process to great health. Right?! Reality check – it is as simple as one step… at a time. Then another step and another and another and another… you get the picture. Great health doesn’t happen overnight, so the first thing to keep in mind is that great health is a one-step-at-a-time process. And I know you can do it!
Now that we’ve agreed that it’s a one-step-at-a-time process… what is that first, most important step to take? This is a personal decision. You get to choose what it is that YOU are most willing to do with every step you take. I’ve got my few favorites that I always recommend and I will share those with you in a bit. However, if you’re not willing to do those things consistently, over time.. they definitely aren’t the most important to YOU and you know what happens then?? You don’t keep up with it and if you’re like me, feeling like a failure soon follows. That’s SOOOOO not a good path to great health… wouldn’t you agree?
Because achieving great health is a one-step-at-a-time process, the absolute best thing you can do is decide what the ONE thing you’re most willing to start today and follow-thru with the majority of the time it comes up. Then, when you’ve mastered that one thing and created a solid, sustainable habit that you’ll carry with you for life, it’s time to move on to the next most important ONE thing. Be cautious of doing too much at once (isn’t that a mantra would should have for every area of our life?) because it often leads to frustration and eventually the give-up syndrome. And that’s definitely not the path to great health.
When I’m working with individual clients, I often suggest they consider one of these three options:
- Increase water intake. Often I recommend increasing it one glass more then they are currently doing. Once they’ve mastered that glass, they increase it another until they’ve reached optimal water intake.
- Include protein every morning for breakfast. If they aren’t eating breakfast, start there.
- Intentionally do some form of exercise and/or movement for 10 minutes every day.
Remember, these are only suggestions. If you’re not willing to do any of those or you’re already doing all of those, keep thinking… what is the next most important thing YOU can do to continue on your path to great health. The beauty of this journey is that each time you consistently complete that “thing” you can gain trust and confidence within yourself, which then leads to a desire a to do it again and eventually do more.
One of the most exciting things for a trainer/coach, like me, is when this concept is taken to heart. I’m currently working with a beautiful individual who started by implementing protein in to her breakfast and then moved on to the next thing she was willing to do and she has consistently dropped weight over the last several months, kept it off and now has to set a new goal!!! Yay!
