Health and Happiness in Your Mouth
Two highly controversial topics when it comes to the health of your mouth: mercury fillings and fluoride. Currently the American Dental Association (ADA) and the FDA have given the thumbs up for mercury amalgam fillings, stating that the mercury in amalgam combined with other metals renders it stable and safe for use in filling cavities. But let’s think about this for a minute – mercury is found in a number of household items… thermometers, thermostats and now light bulbs. When you’re ready to dispose of these items – what are the instructions? According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the safest way to dispose of mercury is to take it to a recycling center or a center that will dispose of heavy metals and other toxins. Whatever you do, DO NOT pour mercury down your drain!! Do not throw it away, do not vacuum it up. The US Environmental Protection Agency has an entire list of things to NEVER do and how to dispose of mercury – check it out atMercury Spills. Now let me ask you this… if mercury is so toxic, WHY WOULD YOU WANT IT IN YOUR MOUTH?! Now I realize that the ‘authorities’ state it’s safe when combined with other metals BUT would you trust a land mine in your house just because the ‘authorities’ put a box around it and said it was safe? If you’re still on the fence, check out what happens when you brush teeth that have mercury amalgam fillings. Jerome Test
If you find yourself with a cavity, search out a dentist that does not use mercury amalgam fillings. If you already have amalgam fillings, it may be time to get them replaced!
OK… on to fluoride. Did you know the CDC and the ADA both agree that too much fluoride is bad? And in today’s world – it’s very common too get too much fluoride due to the addition of fluoride to the water supply in 1945 with the expectation of improved oral health AND the addition of fluoride in many toothpaste products! If you need more proof of its toxicity – check out this label found on all toothpaste products with fluoride:
So, what does fluoride do to you? Besides displacing iodine and messing up your thyroid, it pulls calcium and magnesium out of your bones and thereby gives you weak bones. Something to think about if you have osteoporosis. (As a side note it will also inactivate your pineal gland, which will affect your melatonin and sleep patterns). With all these side effects – do you still believe it’s important to have fluoride in your toothpaste?
